Hypnotherapy can be one of the most effective methods for quitting nicotine, since we are working directly with the very powerful subconscious mind. One of the main reasons it is so hard to quit without hypnotherapy is because even if our conscious mind is completely done with cigarettes and we never want to smoke one again, if our subconscious mind is not on board with that plan we will still end up smoking, because the subconscious mind is more powerful than the conscious mind. The subconscious never sleeps and will take over when we are tired or stressed or just let our guard down. Of course, it is possible to quit smoking without hypnotherapy. Those methods are mostly things like replacement (patches, gum), aversion therapy (e.g. smoking until you're sick), or using immense amounts of willpower to overthrow your subconscious mind and eventually change your relationship to cigarettes over time of not smoking them. Hypnotherapy can be a faster, easier, cheaper way to quit, when it is done by a well-trained professional. The one-session smoking cessation session is the only hypnotherapy session that I use a script for. It has been well-curated over the years, and doesn't involve much back-and-forth therapy (I will ask you to describe a couple things you are experiencing, but much less than a regular session). You just relax wherever you are, listen, and let yourself fall into a relaxation. Your subconscious mind will hear everything I say even as your conscious mind relaxes. The script contains a lot of metaphors for quitting smoking and gaining a calm and relaxation around the process.
The script I use has a success rate of over 90%; most people never need another session. If however you are in that <10% that do need more than one session to quit, the sessions following will be like the hypnotherapy I use in the rest of my practice. We might go back to time in your life that influence your smoking, healing the wounds that still affect you today. For many this involves going back to be with their teenage self and helping them feel valuable and included without having a cigarette in their hand. For others this involves going way back to childhood, maybe when loved ones smoked. For others it might be something that seems totally unrelated to smoking but healing that hurt is a key piece to finally kicking the habit for good.
Hypnotherapy is an incredibly powerful tool for change. Please contact me if you'd like more info or to schedule your quit-smoking session.
